Nailing and Putting Screws into Concrete (to close in porch

New postby Willymb24 » Sun Jan 16, 2005 6:34 pm

I am new to this web site , but am in need for some advise. I am about to close in my back porch and make it into a room. It already has a concreate fondation, but I need to know the best way to nail or screw the stud wall to the concrete. Should I use screws, nails, what type are best ect.... I just need to make sure it is strong to hold up. Any advise or help in this project would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Tapcon concrete screws or powder actuated tool will secure the plate.
You can usually rent either one.

This tread is exactly what I was looking for, and maybe we can discuss this item in more detail...

I'm shortly moving into an all-concrete home. Home construction here (in Taiwan) is all concrete, and represents a big change for a lumber/wall-board guy like me. Tile abounds, as do concrete walls and ceilings.

I too wish to attach items to concrete wall, such as bathroom fixtures, and also to hang pictures. I don't want to make any mistakes, as concrete repair is a bit more difficult, and some of the items must also drill through tile as well.

I notices at the B&Q (local version of the Home Depot) they have a variety of screws for drilling into concrete. Most of these screws have a plastic sleeve that (I'm guessing) is used to prevent the screw from loosening over time, and might also serve to strenghten the fit.

My questions are these:

- The screws here come in a variety of (mm) sizes. What would be a typical size to use for hanging small bathroom hardware, hang pictures, etc?

- When drilling a pilot hole (I'm again guessing that a pilot hole is needed), what kind of bit should I use?

- Again, if a pilot hole is needed, what sized bit should I use if I am tapping a 8mm screw? I'm again guessing that it should be a size or so smaller..

Thanks,

- EricM
