mobile home roof

Postby darrell » Mon May 05, 2003 1:36 pm

I have a 1986 mobile home 14x70 with a metal roof. Can i put foam insulation on top of the tin and put plywood down over that with screws then felt then shingles without it sweating?

Not too sure on that. It doesn't sound like a good idea, but don't quote me on that...

Good answer, Johnnie, Good answer. I would put a new sloped roof with truss on top, totally eliminate any of the possible issues with simply applying foam......Of course, $$$$$ is always an issue. You can always do it cheap, but cheap isn't always the "right" way.

not a good idea

Putting all that weight on your mobilehome roof? Not to mention permits etcetera, it's a bad idea.

You're much better off using an EPDM rubber coating. You can get it in 45mil thick sheets, but the best way is to get it in liquid form and paint it on.

EPDM rubber is way better than the acrylic latex roof coatings you get from Home Depot and the like. It's lightweight, flexible, insulating, lasts practically forever, you don't need a permit, and it's a breeze to use, you're done in just an hour or two depending on the size of the roof.

These guys have info about it: http://www.liquid-roof.com/ (nope, I don't know anyone at that company, I've just used their product and really liked it)

Hope that helps you out.

Welcome to the forum, Chris.

I was browsing through your site:

Q - How many lawyers does it take to shingle a roof?
A - Depends on how thin you slice 'em.

Funny one. 8)

Metal Roof

Use Topps metal roof products, they are made for that. It will also lower the temp. inside your trailer by 20 degrees. http://www.topps.com.
I use this product often and I'm very impressed with the stuff!

Darrell
I am curious as to which way you went to do your mobile roof. I also own a 12 x 56 single-wide and have roof issues. It is on waterfront property at Hoodsport WA and with the Shoreline Management act, I'm not sure if I can do anything to it. I had considered using the blocks to put new walls up alongside the existing single-wide walls and go high enough to get a roof deck out of it for the view. Still in the thought process---

Hi,
Im a Metal Roofing Fabricator. I have been re-roofing existing mobile home roofs for about 11yrs. I have a system, I use, that is less then 1lb. per sq. ft. It is ventilated and also strenghthens the existing roof structure. There are 13 beautiful colors to choose from. Putting this system on will assure the end to any and all roofing issues.
hi, i am a metal roofing fabricator in cetral pa.i specialize in re-roofing existing metal mobile home roofs. the system i use not only reinforces the exising roof deck but essentially makes the roof "bullet proof" email: keithbaker1@earthlink.net or phone (814)224-4268.

I also recommend Tops, using plywood is an especially bad idea and I wouldn't really go that route personally. good luck
